Creative Hand Show and Sale 2017

On November 17-18 the 2017 Creative Hand Show and Sale will open at Old Shawnee Town Hall, located at 11600 Johnson Drive in Shawnee, Kansas. The Kansas City Fiber and Weavers’ Guilds sponsor this event. Both days have free show entry and free parking.

This year 65 artists will walk into an empty room, and in a matter of 7 hours, they will create a beautiful gallery for their art. This is the original pop-up shop, and they have been doing this for 34 years. Over the course of a day and a half more than a thousand people will come in search of fiber arts they can see, touch and even wear.

For the past year, members of the two guilds have met monthly to collaborate and demonstrate their work and inspiration. Once a year, they share their artistry and skill with the public. Artists from both groups will come together on November 17-18 for the Creative Hand Show and Sale. The show is both an exhibition and sale of art-to-wear that members of both groups have created by hand.

Creativity starts with raising sheep and/or alpaca for the fibers. Then the artists spin the wool into yarn, which they weave, knit or crochet into fabulous art-to-wear. Others sew, felt and bead hand dyed fabric into museum quality fiber art pieces. The results are one of a kind pieces, jackets, shawls, accessories, scarves, home décor, table linens, gifts, and holiday decorations – all designed by these artists. Along with the finished products, they also offer hand spun yarn and hand dyed roving.

While the artwork is amazing, Creative Hand also prides itself on its philanthropy. The show donates 5% of the total sales to selected groups. Creative Hand seeks out charities that have an art or fiber related mission. One group the show supports is Crafters Emergency Relief Fund or CERF. This group helps artists and crafters rebuild their studios after disasters like the Joplin tornado.

The Creative Hand Show will feature a Friday night Artist Showcase and a Saturday filled with fiber demonstrations. Hours for the event are Friday, November 17, 4 pm to 9 pm with the Artist Showcase at 7 pm; and Saturday, November 18, 10 am to 5 pm with Fiber Technique Demonstrations throughout the day. Visitors can learn about carding wool, spinning fiber, and needle felting.
